Small Space With Custom Furniture: Transforming an Airbnb in Ghana from Floor to Feature Wall
There’s a belief that holds a lot of people back when they think about interior design in Ghana: “My space is too small to do anything impressive with.”
We hear it regularly. From homeowners. From landlords. From short-let property operators who look at a compact room and assume that size is a limitation they have to accept that beautiful, thoughtful, high-quality interior design is a privilege reserved for big spaces.
This project proves otherwise.
When the brief came in for a short-let Airbnb property, the space wasn’t generous. It wasn’t a sprawling villa or a duplex with room to breathe. It was compact, a real-world room that needed to work hard: sleep a guest comfortably, impress on sight, photograph well, and deliver the kind of finish that earns five-star reviews and repeat bookings.
We delivered wall cladding, a custom TV unit, and a bespoke bed frame – a complete interior fit-out, every element designed specifically for the space. The result speaks for itself. And the lesson it carries is one worth sharing.
The Challenge: Making a Small Room Feel Like a Destination
Designing a small space well is actually harder than designing a large one. In a big room, you have room for error, errors such as a piece that’s slightly too large, a feature that doesn’t quite land, a proportion that’s slightly off. The space absorbs it. In a small room, every decision is visible, every proportion matters, and the difference between a space that feels considered and one that feels cramped comes down entirely to the quality of the design thinking behind it.
For an Airbnb specifically, the stakes are commercial. Guests are comparing your listing against dozens of others. The photos are everything. The experience on arrival that first impression when the door opens determines the review. A poorly designed compact room feels exactly like what it is: small. A well-designed one feels curated, intentional, and premium regardless of its footprint.
The brief we were given had three components: wall cladding to define the feature wall, a custom TV unit integrated into that wall, and a bespoke bed frame that anchored the room without overwhelming it. Three elements. One unified design. One small space transformed.
The Feature Wall: Cladding That Changes Everything
The single highest-impact intervention in any small room is the feature wall and done right, it does more work per square metre than any other design decision you can make.
For this project, we installed wood-grain wall cladding panels on the primary wall behind the bed. The effect is immediate and dramatic: the wall stops being background and becomes architecture. It has texture, depth, and warmth. It gives the eye something to rest on. And in a room where floor space is limited, it draws the gaze upward and outward visually expanding the space rather than compressing it.
Wall cladding: also known as wall panelling, walldrop, or a wall drop installation is one of the most requested finishes we see in Accra interior projects right now, and for good reason. It transforms a flat, painted surface into a designed element. It photographs beautifully. It requires no structural work. And it applies to virtually any room size which is exactly what makes it such a powerful tool in compact spaces.
For the Airbnb, we used a wall panel design with clean vertical lines and a warm, mid-toned wood grain finish. The cladding ran full height, from floor to ceiling, which is a deliberate proportion choice. Full-height panels make ceilings feel taller and rooms feel longer. In a small room, this is not a stylistic preference; it’s a spatial strategy.
The panels also served a unifying function: they tied the bed and TV unit together visually, creating a single composed wall rather than three separate elements sharing a surface. Cohesion is what separates a designed room from a furnished one.
The TV Unit: Custom-Built for the Space, Not for a Catalogue
In a compact Airbnb bedroom, the TV unit cannot be an afterthought. It needs to do multiple jobs at once; hold the television securely, manage cables invisibly, provide storage, and contribute to the overall design of the room without dominating it.
A freestanding TV stand in a small room almost always fails this test. It sits on the floor, takes up precious footprint, and creates a visual break in the wall composition that makes the room feel busier and smaller. It also tends to look generic, which is the opposite of what a short-let property needs to stand out.
For this project, we built a custom floating TV unit – wall-mounted, flush with the cladding panel design, with cable management integrated into the structure so that no wire is visible from anywhere in the room. The unit appears to grow out of the wall naturally, sitting at precisely the right height for comfortable viewing from the bed.
The floating design where the unit is mounted off the ground with a clear gap below does something important in a small room: it preserves the floor line. When you can see the full floor without interruption, the room reads as larger. A floor-standing unit with a plinth or legs breaks that line and creates visual clutter at exactly the level where the eye travels most.
The storage integrated into the unit offers recessed compartments for a decoder and remote controls keeps the surface clean and the room looking organised, which matters enormously for a rental property where guests arrive expecting a premium experience and photograph everything.
This is what custom TV units deliver that catalogue pieces cannot: a fit that is precise to the room, calibrated to the cladding and bed around it, and built to perform practically without compromising the visual design.
The Bed Frame: The Room’s Anchor
In a small bedroom, the bed is not just the largest piece of furniture, it is the room. Everything else is organised around it, responds to it, and either harmonises with it or fights against it.
We designed and built a custom bed frame for this project with a fabric-upholstered panelled headboard that extended to the full width of the cladding wall. This is a specific design choice with a specific purpose: by spanning the full wall width, the headboard ties the cladding, the TV unit, and the bed into a single horizontal composition. The room feels intentional. Resolved. Finished.
The bed base was built low and clean; no unnecessary bulk, no fussy detailing, no oversized feet that consume floor space. In a compact room, a low bed frame opens up visual height and keeps the space feeling open. Every centimetre of unnecessary height on a bed frame is a centimetre lost from the ceiling and in a small room, ceiling height is one of the most valuable assets you have.
The fabric and finish of the headboard were selected to complement the wood tone of the cladding panels warm, grounded, and cohesive. This is the kind of decision that seems small in isolation but is the difference between a room that feels designed as a whole and one that feels assembled from unrelated pieces.
The result: a custom bed frame that fits the room exactly, anchors the design, and adds the sense of quality and care that Airbnb guests are paying for when they choose a short-let over a hotel.
The Result: A Room That Earns Its Reviews
When the project was complete, the room had been entirely redefined. Not enlarged, the footprint was the same. But the experience of being in it was completely different.
The wall cladding gave it character and warmth. The floating TV unit kept it clean and functional without any visual noise. The bespoke bed frame gave it the feel of a boutique hotel room rather than a furnished rental. And the fact that every element was designed together; same tone, same proportions, same design language meant the room read as a considered space rather than a collection of separate decisions.
